ok, so my computer crashed (blue-screen of death kind of crash) the other day. why am i celebrating? well there's more to the story.
thankfully a reboot fixed the blue screen of death but for whatever reason the wireless router was no longer working and needed to be reset which erased all of the wonderfully anal security settings as well as the general necessary configurations that were set up by my roommate who is no longer servicing that piece of equipment, if you know what i mean. before my roommy left, he wrote an English interface (THANK YOU!) to the Korean interface to the wireless router which i bought in korea (just 'cause the box has english written on it .... [can you guess the rest of the sentence?]) but other than that i was left to fend for myself should a situation such as the one described above arise, as it did.
ok, i got wireless working (yes, i know i'm the only one in the apartment now and no longer ~technically~ need to use the wireless router since i have a cable long enough to reach the internet port in the wall, but i'll be using my wireless router at my new house with 3 other people requiring internet access so it was best that i figure all this out on my own time) anywho ....
wireless working - check
pretty easy to configure on the fly; need to think up a name for wireless network, pick the right security option and think up a good-n-complicated password which the users will use when setting up access to the wireless network from their computers
further secured wireless connection - check
pretty easy to configure on the fly; need to know MAC address of user's wireless card and can also specify static IPs to each computer in the network and permit access by IP thereby denying others
port forwarding for p2p stuff - uh oh
i got port forwarding working for eMule and verified everything was back in working order but port forwarding was not working for uTorrent even though i followed the same pattern of configuration as i did with eMule. and i tried several different configuration ideas but none were solutions. the uTorrent verification tool which checks if port forwarding is correctly configured reported "ERROR" and suggested the user (that's me) ensure PG2 is allowing uTorrent.com. PG2 is a separate piece of software which i figured was already configured correctly prior to and after the crash so it took me a while to consider the solution might actually involve making a configuration change in that software. either it was never configured correctly or was working under a different set of configurations (several applications work in unison on my machine to provide safety, anonymity and P2P access) because i eventually found out by trial and error, that i indeed needed to permanently add the ip addy for uTorrent.com to the allowable list in PG2. then reran the uTorrent verification tool. "OK"

it would soon become evident that just because the ports are forwarded correctly in uTorrent, that doesn't mean all is in working order. logging in to the uTorrent DHT was failing. after a little perusing the internet for similar scenario i found this gem, and i appreciate the user named "Stucatz" who asked for help, got a lot of non-constructive crap from the moderators, decided to sleuth it out himself, came back 2 days later and politely posted his solution which is what got my uTorrent DHT login process working again. (thank goodness for people like Stucatz who don't get easily offended in this world ... anyway, intelligence always trumps cockiness and hot air. i love that.)

Man, I hate configuring networks! As you know now, w29n51.sys in the blue-screen message relates to an error in the wireless LAN driver, and that may be due to malware camouflaging itself as w29n51.sys.
The "STOP:lots of numbers" message surprisingly didn't bring up anything on Google, so it must be something very arcane!
Re: uTorrent. I've opened the necessary port in the Windows firewall and sometimes there's a green tick at the bottom of the uTorrent window, but often there isn't. But when I test if the port is being forwarded properly it reports that it is. I have no idea what DHT means or if I "need it". Well, my torrent speeds are very up and down, depends on the file wanted.
Anyway, I'm impressed that you got the router working again. Way to go Suzy - you won't be beaten by technology! ;-)
hi tim, oh, thanks for looking in to the blue-screen message. i didn't know. i took the approach of plowing through each technical roadblock that i encountered to get everything back in working order rather than try to find 'what the heck happened?!' but now i'm intrigued! i will google when i get back from work today to read more on it. thanks.

well i did get the router working again but the proxy is not playing nicely with the router - it must be a configuration error to which i have yet found a solution.
DHT (distributed hash table) is the process by which p2p apps find the data their peers contain. this is a clearer explanation. if you allow each of your torrents' trackers to announce your connection then you don't need DHT, but from my "beginners-level" understanding of all this, the trackers are need to create a "swarm" and if you have a swarm then you get the green light on uTorrent but (again, i'm a newbie) the drawback is that trackers can announce you by IP and then your ISP has a record of your torrent request. and then, there's this bit of info i found here on DHT:
The problem with using DHT on a private torrent is that the data in the torrent file you download that identifies who you are (for your account ratio) gets passed to other users. That screws up your ratio because others are downloading with your account info. You can very quickly find yourself below the enforced limit if you don't disable DHT.
basically i don't have an answer as to whether you need DHT or not. it can be disabled globally or per torrent.
i think what it comes down to is a trade off between anonymity and speed. i'm still learning on this topic so ... until the next data dump ....
