i felt it

i felt the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the Gangwon Province (just outside of Seoul) on Saturday. i was sitting in bed and felt the building shake quietly underneath me for about 5 seconds. the key hanging on a chain from my Guardian Angel clip on my desk started clinking and swinging. i immediately suspected an earthquake and called matt to ask him if he felt the ground move where he was. he said that he had not. so i reasoned that either it was an earthquake or some serious trauma to our apartment - like a wrecking ball to the side of the building.

An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook the east coast and was felt in most parts of the country Saturday evening, raising concerns that the Korean Peninsula is no longer safe from seismic activity. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said the quake occurred at 8:56 p.m., adding that the epicenter was PyeongChang in Kwangwon Province, 150 kilometers east of Seoul.

"The tremor in Kangnung and Sokcho along the east coast lasted 3 to 5 seconds, causing buildings and windows to shake," a KMA official said. He said that Saturday's earthquake was the eighth strongest tremor ever reported in Korea.

Earthquakes measuring 4.9 are classified as light tremors, while those reaching 5.9 are referred to as moderate. Tremors of 6.9 or higher are considered strong earthquakes. No serious damage or injuries have been reported. People living in the densely populated Seoul and Kyonggi Province reported a slight shaking of the ground and buildings. They expressed concern that Korea is not immune to earthquakes.

Experts say that South Korea is not well prepared for potential disasters, including an earthquake, as a large number of people do not know how to react to an emergency. They warned that a quake with a magnitude of more than five might rattle the country in the next several years, pointing out that the nation is not well prepared for a potential disaster arising from seismic activity.
