one of the things i enjoy doing in church is singing hymns ~ some new ones that i've heard for the first time here in Korea at the MyeongDong Cathedral as well as songs that i grew up on.
one of my strongest church memories is being small and standing next to my dad during mass and looking up to him while he sang because he sang so loudly and proudly that it made me stop what i was doing (which was probably something to kill the boredom that i remember feeling every time i went to church as a youngster) and look with wonder and awe at my dad.
now when i sing at church i usually think of my dad. when i hear a man singing loudly at church i think of my dad. anyway, i really like singing at church. if it's a new song that i've never heard before then i follow the musical notes on the page and try to sing it correctly (key word: "try") but the person standing in front of me is bound to hear a few musical notes way off key being bellowed from my lungs until i'm familiar with the melody.
usually the first thing i do in church, after getting the missalette and hymn book and finding my seat, is check the song list for the day to see if any of them are of my favorites. today's offering song was Sing a New Song. this is one from my memory archives which i only just remembered to put on my fave list, which now consists of:
Here I Am Lord
I Am The Bread of Life
Seed Scattered and Sown
Sing A New Song
then, after church [getting to the point of this post ...] i went to a nearby coffee shop that has these lovely oversized, semi-private, 3-walled booths with fluffy accent pillows and a huge block table where i was able to sprawl out and study for four hours over hot chocolate (with a cold dollop of whip cream on top!) and a bacon, egg and cheese bagel [okay, so this has nothing to do with my point ...] and then i went home to do the other thing i'm enjoying these days besides dancing and singing at church: watching movies about dancing.
last weekend it was Dirty Dancing. next weekend it's Buena Vista Social Dance Club (a documentary). this weekend it's Footloose. [now i'm getting to my point ...] in Footloose, (oh btw, Kevin Bacon is 50 these days! holy crap how can that be possible?) when Ren McCormack attends the ultra conservative town council to put forth a motion to abolish the no dancing law so that the senior class could hold a dance, he uses bible versus to try to convince the religious board members to change their views. the bible verse he used was Psalm 144:9 I will sing a new song to You Lord.
so my point is: coincidences seem to inspire me to write about them ...
and ... i love to dance and sing ~ new songs, old dances, old songs, and new dances ... loudly and proudly.
