today i left the house without shaving my legs. maybe i shouldn't have done that. lol. i'm going to a flickr meetup and i have about 45 minute subway ride so i brought a book (Running with Scissors, a b-day gift from a friend in the States) and my journal.
this weekend i watched a cute mother-daughter movie called "Because I Said So" with Diane Keaton, Mandy Moore and that Gilmore Girls mom - Lorelai, though she was a daughter in this movie. i felt the "what does an orgasm feel like" scene (the mom asks the daughter) to be so unreal and could have been done differently if they wanted it to be believable. anytime a woman talks on screen about an orgasm it's so hard not to think about Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally". Was it really revolutionary at that time to say woman faked orgasms? it's seems so commonplace a notion these days.
i also watched "The Lives of Others", set in the 80s in GDR (east germany), before the fall of the Berlin wall. the Stasi were secretly monitoring the lives of artists to identify and punish those whose ideas and creative works disfavored the socialist state. the movie focused on one of the Stasi agents who began to sympathize with the subjects he was assigned to secretly monitor. he hid from his reports acts that were considered dissident. the movie culminated with a shocking event soaked in irony.
i'm almost finished reading a book called "Home was the Land of Morning Calm" which covers the history of Korea from before the first Japanese occupation in the 1500s to just after the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, through the eyes of the Korean-American author born in 1943. i loved the her writing style. she clearly spent a lot of time studying historical and political events that shaped korea's growth. she's such a talker too, so mixed between facts and figures are big juicy chucks of her feelings and personal thoughts and well, girly goodness. when a book this good comes along i have to decide whether or not i'll trade it back in at the used book store or keep it. when i grow up i want a bookcase that spans the size of one wall and i want to fill it with books that i read.

I've wanted to see "The Lives of Others." I will watch it as soon as possible and give you the "long-awaited" review that you have been waiting longly for. I'm glad you found it interesting. That gives me hope that I will, also. J-nice finds all the movies I like "interesting," so maybe she can watch it too!
