Dubai's Tourist Plans

it is estimated that by 2016 Dubai's oil supply will run dry. Dubai's sheik wants to transform Dubai into a land fueled by tourism - they aim to be the world's top tourist destination.

would you vacation in Dubai? i'm not sure i would - don't think it would fit my budget. i just finish watching National Geographic's "Mega Structures: World Island Wonder" about the island project Dubai is constructing called "The World" named so because, well, the island reclamation is in the shape of the world. it's fun to watch from an engineering perspective, specifically how they managed to create breakwaters low enough not to obstruct the view of the sea but with enough substance to reduce the impact of the semiannual Shamal storms that bring 2 meter waves. and also how they managed to prevent stagnant water. from an environmentalists perspective, it's also fun to watch, as the breakwaters were built with natural elements.

i recommend checking it out.

it'll make you go ooooooh, aaaaaaaah

Ah, rich men and their follies! Umm, let me see, would I rather go see an artificial Ireland with a concrete "Giant's Causeway", or the real thing?

Dubai is fast becomming a place that supports the expression, "Just because it can be built, doesn't mean it should be built."

If I was a m/billionaire and could choose anywhere to live, I'd choose somewhere more real with natural beauty and culture and without the thousands of tourists sailing past my house!
