after months and months of trying and giving up and trying and giving up i finally found a link via a google search that helped me look in the right direction to find the culprit that was blocking my Gmail RTF (and other GMAIL) buttons from loading. i thought it was a Firefox addon preventing them since a brand new Firefox profile without any addons could display the button images no problem and IE too could display them no problem, and also, my Firefox at home could display them no problem too and my Firefox configuration at work is the same, or so i thought, as my Firefox configuration on my home computer. turns out that my Firefox profile at work had to be configured to specifically _ALLOW_ image loading for the mail.google.com website. here's the link that got me pointed in the right direction for fixing the problem.
